A brief Note About Stomach Cancer
Cancer. It is the word hard to hear, speak or think. Cancer is a disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body. Cancer can start in one part of the body and continue to grow to other places if not treated in time. Today, I want to talk about one particular type of cancer: Gastric cancer or Stomach cancer.
Gastric cancer can dormant for years, but it starts in the mucus-producing cells in the lining of the stomach. It is cancer known as adenocarcinoma that can grow from the top of the stomach (cardio) and ends at the swallowing tube (esophagus).
In 2018, the American Cancer Society says about 26, 240 woman and men have cases of stomach cancer in the United States. The number of cases has decreased by about 1.5% each year in the last ten years, but still is one the leading causes of cancer-related deaths.
In the late 1930s, gastric cancer became the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. There was a decrease in deaths after a few reasons. One of the theoretical reasons is the growing increase in refrigeration of food. This created more fresh fruit and vegetable availability and less salted and smoked foods.
Doctors also think the decline in Gastric cancer is the growth in antibiotics when treating certain infections. The antibiotics kill the bacteria Helicobacter (H pylori), which is the main cause of Gastric cancer. There is further research to be done on this theory, but doctors find that someone infected with the H pylori bacteria can reduce their chance of getting Gastric cancer by eating a healthy diet.
During the pre-cancerous activity, there are many changes that happen in the lining of the stomach.
1. Chronic atrophic gastritis- this happens when the normal glands in the stomach decrease or become absent. Atrophic gastritis can be caused by an infection of H pylori, which attacks the cells lining of the stomach and the immune system.
2. Intestinal metaplasia- the normal lining of the stomach is replaced by cells that are similar to the cell that in the lining of the intestine. This condition is accompanied by Atrophic gastritis.
3. Salted or smoked food- the H pylori bacteria can be concealed in some foods that can cause mutations or changes in the DNA of the cells in the stomach lining. One type of food is preserved meats. Food like fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that protect from substances that cause damage to a cell's DNA.
4. Genes- There are abnormal changes that affect the chemicals in a cell and it can carry to the genes. One case is Oncogenes, which help a cell grow and divide. The tumor suppressor gene is to assist in keeping cell division controlled and kill cells at the right time. If there is a change or damage in any of the phases, the risk of cancer will become great.
Treatment
As I said before, treatment for Gastric cancer is going to be different than a treatment for Colon cancer. For Gastric cancer, there are many options, depending on how far cancer has developed. There is surgery, chemotherapy, Specialty therapist for Gastric cancer patients, Immunotherapy, and radiation therapy.

There are alternative ways of treating Gastric cancer. The methods are vitamins, herbs, special diets, and acupuncture or massage. Other treatments could make someone feel better, but it may not be something that works. Symptoms

- Fatigue
- Feeling bloated after eating

- Severe, persistent heartburn

ReplyDeleteMy daughter (Annabel) suffered from schizophrenia for 5 years. I had no idea what was happening and didn’t know where to turn for help. It was hard then because I really didn’t understand the symptoms earlier until she was diagnosed. There was a time she decided to get away from everyone, I was not excluded. I had to sit and cry almost every day because I felt helpless as a single mother (she is all I have got).
